Description
This is a mid-to-late 18th-century town house with two later shops on the ground floor, located on Church Street in Launceston. The exterior is incised stucco on studwork, topped with a steep rag slate roof and a decorative eaves cornice featuring modillions. The building has an irregular plan and is three stories high, originally featuring a three-window front. Most windows are probably original hornless sash windows with thick glazing bars within moulded architraves. The first-floor sash windows were shortened when the shops were inserted, and the two right-hand second-floor sash windows were removed during a previous survey. The ground floor now has two early 20th-century shop fronts, with pilasters and plain fascias featuring moulded cornices. The larger shop front on the left has central splayed doorway with a pair of glazed doors and two lights to either side, along with return lights, and slender turned mullions. The other shop front has a later 20th-century plate glass window and glazed door with overlight, and adjacent to these is the original house doorway, which has a four-panel door. The interior was not inspected but is likely to contain features of interest.
