Description

No. 22 Church Street is a warehouse built around 1870, originally inscribed as "Hayman's Pianoforte Warehouse." The building features dressed granite and freestone at the shop front, with red brick and stucco above. It has a very steep rag slate hip roof at the front, supported by a bracketed eaves cornice, and a cast-iron ogee gutter. The structure has a deep irregular plan on the front part of a triangular site situated between Church Street and High Street, designed in the Venetian Gothic style.

The warehouse stands three storeys tall with a three-bay front, showcasing round arches on the lower floors. The second floor features an arcade of six shouldered arches with original transomed lights above a deep moulded sill cornice, forming a shallow balcony with a projecting iron balustrade. The first floor has moulded arches over acanthus impost cornices, with a six-pane two-light casement on the left and otherwise two-pane casements, all topped with plain fanlights over transomes enriched with balls. The ground floor has a two-light double shop front with moulded arches, hoods, and tall keyblocks, which are linked to a stone fascia with moulded cornices and large end stops. A central doorway is flanked by polished marble columns with near Corinthian capitals and granite end pilasters with similar capitals. The doors were replaced in the late 20th century. The interior has not been inspected.
