Description

This is an early to mid-18th century town house with a later shop front. It is built of granite ashlar courses alternating with rubble, with a continuous wooden lintel across the ground floor. The steeply pitched rag slate roof has three gabled dormers, each with 20th-century six-pane, two-light casement windows. An angled eaves cornice runs around the building. The house has a double-depth plan and a five-window front. The windows are likely original 18th-century sashes with thick glazing bars. The central doorway has a pediment supported by pilasters and consoles, with panelled reveals and a six-panel door; the overlight is traceried with a central oval. A late 20th-century double shop front occupies the left side. The rear of the building is of stone rubble. A late 18th-century two-storey canted bay window is on the left, with three sixteen-pane hornless sashes in each bay, slate-hung aprons, and a coved eaves cornice that returns towards the adjoining property. The interior, which was inaccessible during the survey, contains a good quality early 18th-century open-well staircase with turned balusters, a ramped handrail, and scrolled newel posts.
