Description
No. 9 Fore Street is a house and shop dated 1688, with mid-19th century alterations for the shop and some later modifications. The building is constructed of rendered stone rubble and features a slate roof with gable ends and a gable end stack on the left. The front has a central entrance that leads to the shop on the ground floor, and it may have originally extended further to the rear, but is now a single depth plan.
The structure has two storeys on a plinth and two windows. The first floor contains two 16-pane sash windows, with a recessed datestone between them that has the inscription TBA 1688. The ground floor features a glazed door with a hipped hood supported by brackets, a plate-glass window to the left set in a plain raised architrave, and a small bay window to the right with a hipped roof and plate-glass windows. The left side of the building has a wall that is chamfered to the front, a blocked doorway to the left with a 20th-century plate-glass window inserted, and the upper storey has been completely rebuilt in brick. The interior has not been inspected.
