Description
No. 5 Fore Street is a house that now functions as a shop and offices on the ground floor. It was built around 1800 and has undergone alterations in the mid-19th century and 20th century. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, resting on a granite plinth, and features a slate roof with gable ends, although the stacks have been removed.
The layout is a double depth plan, with a rear wing on both the right and left sides. It likely had a central entrance originally, with large rooms on either side; the left side has been modified to include a shop in the 20th century. The building has three storeys and five windows. The ground floor features a large 20th-century shop front bay that projects to the left, complete with a cornice, modern glazing, and a central door with an overlight. To the right of the shop front, there is another 20th-century door and two 4-pane sash windows at the far right, with a brick band course above.
On the first floor, there is a central 12-pane sash window with sidelights, flanked by two 12-pane sashes on either side, all featuring brick voussoirs. The second floor has a central 9-pane sash window with sidelights, with two 9-pane sashes on the right and left. The interior has not been inspected.
