Description

Coinage Hall, now a house, likely originated in the late 13th or 14th century, with subsequent alterations and a 20th-century conversion. It was formerly the workshop of the Stannary Exchequer and forms part of the historic Duchy Palace group. The building is constructed of slatestone rubble with granite and Pentewan stone dressings, and has an asbestos slate roof with gable ends. Originally a two-storey range which probably extended further east to Quay Street, it has been truncated by a later building on the street frontage, now appearing as a single-storey structure. The north front features a central pointed arched, chamfered doorway in Pentewan stone with 20th-century double doors. To the right are two windows with granite sills, and a tall opening with a 20th-century French window inserted. To the left are two tall openings; the lower portions of these have been blocked and 20th-century windows inserted, with dressed granite masonry in between. The original heads of the tall openings appear to be lost. The interior has been significantly altered. One tie-beam, probably re-sited, remains resting on the wall tops at the left end, while the left-end wall itself appears to be a later insertion.
