Description
Nos 25 and 26 on Fore Street are a pair of houses that have been modified into a house and shop. They date from the late 18th century and were refronted in the mid-19th century, with further alterations made later. The buildings are constructed of rendered stone rubble and have an asbestos slate roof with gable ends and a brick stack on the right side. Each house is single depth, originally featuring an end entrance leading to a passage, with the main rooms situated back to back at the front. There is a rear service wing on the right, mostly from the 20th century. The buildings are two storeys tall; on the left, there is a 20th-century door with an overlight that leads to an internal porch for No 25, and a 20th-century shop front to the right. At the far right, there is a door leading to No 26. On the first floor, there are three 4-pane sash windows, and the boxed eaves feature guttering adorned with lion masks. The interior has been significantly altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. At the back of No 25, there is a straight stair along the rear, which retains a balustrade at the first-floor landing, complete with fine turned balusters and a moulded handrail.
