Description

Nos 11 and 12 on Fore Street in Lostwithiel is a house that has been converted into two shops on the ground floor and two houses on the upper floors. It dates from around 1780 and features two mid-19th century shop fronts along with later alterations. The building is constructed from rubble with a stucco front and has a hipped mansard slate roof, with brick stacks on both sides. It has a double depth plan with a central entrance, and the main rooms are located to the front right and left, while the stair hall is at the rear right. The two front principal rooms have been turned into shops in the mid-19th century, with No 11 including the central entrance passage.

The building is two storeys high and has five bays, with rusticated quoins and a plain moulded eaves cornice. The first floor features 15-pane sash windows. The ground floor has a central six-panelled door with a fanlight that has splayed glazing bars, flanked by pilasters and topped with an open pediment. The shop front on the left has a tiled stall riser with the name "Liddicoat" and a floral motif, a plate-glass window, and a half-glazed door to the right with toplights, along with a moulded cornice and consoles. The shop front on the right has a bay that projects forward, with a panelled stall riser featuring a decorative cast iron ventilation grille, plate-glass windows, and a central recessed entrance with a glazed door; it also has a boxed fascia and cornice.

Inside No 12, there is a stair hall at the rear with an oval well and a lantern above, leading to a fine oval open well stair with a moulded string and stick balusters. The handrail is moulded and ramped with a serpentine end. On the first floor, all doors are six-panelled and fielded, with reeded architraves and reeded segmental archways at the front and rear. The front room features a plaster cornice with moulded flowers, likely from the early 19th century. The central entrance passage, now part of No 11, has two doorways to the right; one formerly led to the front room and the other to the rear stair hall, both adorned with reeded pilasters and a fanlight with splayed glazing bars. The rear door is panelled and half-glazed, also with a similar fanlight, and the floor is stone paved.
