Description
27 and 28 Fore Street are a pair of attached houses built around 1780, with 19th century and later alterations. They are constructed of rendered stone rubble and have slate roofs with gable ends and ridge stacks. No 27 is on the left and has a passage to the right with the main room to the left, while No 28 has an off-centre entrance to the left, a small room to the left, and a larger main room to the right. Both houses have a double depth plan with service rooms at the rear and a staircase along the party wall. In the mid-19th century, both houses were converted into shops on the ground floor. They are two storeys high with an attic and feature a continuous dentil cornice at the moulded eaves.
No 27 has a mid-19th century shop front with window bays on the left and right, pilasters, and a fascia, along with a central half-glazed door. The first floor has a 12-pane sash window, and the second floor also has a 12-pane sash window. No 28 features a large plate-glass window on the ground floor left (formerly a shop window) with a four-panelled and glazed door with a cornice on brackets. To the right, there is a canted 19th century shop window with six large panes and a half-glazed door with an overlight. The first floor has a four-pane sash window, a six-pane sash window, and two 12-pane sashes under the eaves.
Inside, each house has a straight staircase that runs back to back along the party wall, with one Chinoiserie panel on the balustrade at the first-floor landing. The rest of the stairs have stick balusters. No 27 features two-panelled doors on the second floor, with the front room partitioned at the second floor and re-used fielded shutters on the window.
