Description

Probably dating to the early 19th century, this granary was likely associated with Boscadjack Mill. It is constructed of painted granite rubble with dressed granite quions, jambstones, and lintels, featuring slate sills and a half-hipped scantle slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan and originally included a front doorway on the north-west (road-facing) side, with granite steps leading to a first-floor loading doorway on the left. It is two storeys high, with a granary loft above a basement. The north-west front has a slightly irregular three-window arrangement. Granite steps approach from the left, and an original ground-floor doorway is located just to the right of the steps. There is a central window with a first-floor window above, and a former window opening to the right, now widened into a doorway with a sliding ledged door. The first-floor openings are original, including a window to the left, the loading doorway at the top of the steps, a central window, and a window towards the right. The windows are divided ledge doors and circa mid-19th century nine-pane, centre-pivoted sash windows. There are two ground-floor doorways on the left-hand end wall, and an early 19th century 12-pane horizontal sliding sash window on the right-hand end wall. The interior has not been inspected. Records indicate the presence of stables in 1808, suggesting this building may have originally served that purpose. Aside from the enlargement of one window, the building is virtually unaltered since the 19th century and harmonizes well with the also largely unaltered Boscadjack Mill across the road.
