Description
The bridge over the River Cober in Sithney dates from the early 19th century and is constructed from granite rubble with some roughly dressed granite used for the responds, lintels, and copings. It features a two-span design with a cutwater on the upstream side and an extended cutwater on the downstream side. The bridge has a simple lintel construction and low parapets, with the copings secured by iron staples. Above each parapet, there are looped-headed iron stanchions with a single bar threaded through the loops. This bridge exemplifies the Clapper Bridge principle and remains a complete and unaltered example of a simple road bridge. It was likely crucial for the economy of the area, which had many working watermills along the Cober Valley, including the nearby Boscadjack Mill.
