Description

Boscadjack Mill is a former water mill dating from the early to mid 19th century. It features granite rubble walls with dressed granite quoins, jambstones, and lintels, along with slate sills. The roof is a half-hipped scantle slate design, grouted with bitumen. The building has a rectangular plan, with a later lean-to added on the right side and was originally equipped with two overshot water wheels at the back. There is a loading doorway in the left gable end.

The mill stands three storeys tall, with the ground floor only lit at the front, while the upper floors have windows at both the front and rear. All windows are original, dating from the early to mid 19th century, and are 16-pane centre-pivotted single lights. The northeast front is symmetrical with two windows and a central blocked doorway.

Inside, there is an original axial beam towards the rear of the ground floor or basement, which has trimmers for carrying two pairs of stones (the stones have been removed). Two original heavy cross beams support the second floor, and the roof structure dates from the mid to late 19th century. The interior has been refloored and fittings removed.

Historical records indicate that there was a grist mill and stables on this site around 1808, possibly in this building or its predecessor. A 20th-century painting depicts a thatched miller's house to the north, adjacent to the current miller's house, featuring a large stone chimney likely from the 17th or early 18th century. This suggests that milling has been a part of this site since at least that time. Boscadjack Mill is noted for being an unusually complete mill building, with its windows being a particularly interesting feature.
