Description
Trannack Mill is a watermill dating from the early 19th century. It features granite rubble walls with some dressed granite used for the quoins and jambstones, topped by a hipped corrugated iron roof at the lower end (southeast). The mill has a small rectangular plan, with a working attic above a basement. The overshot waterwheel is located in the middle of the northeast side, accompanied by a small window under the eaves to light the attic. The attic doorway is situated in the middle of the northwest wall, which is built into the bank, while the basement doorway is in the middle of the southwest wall. Inside the attic, there are two pairs of millstones, although one top stone is missing. The waterwheel remains in situ and is fairly complete, featuring wooden spokes, iron rims, and wooden buckets. The interior is virtually complete and has remained unaltered since the 19th century, showcasing the timber structure for the machinery, all machinery workings including geared wheels and cogs, as well as the floor and roof structures. At the time of the survey in 1986, the site was very overgrown but was noted to be remarkably complete and notable for its small size. The Cober valley was home to many successful watermills, with three others included in this listing.
