Description
Lower Boscadjack Farmhouse is a house dating from around the middle of the 19th century. It is constructed of granite blocks, systematically laid to the front, with painted rubble elsewhere, and features dressed granite quoins, jambstones, sills, and lintels. The roof is covered in scantle slate, with two-stage brick chimneys positioned over the gable ends, and cast-iron ogee gutters.
The house was originally designed with a double-depth plan, consisting of two equal front rooms with a cross passage leading to a central staircase at the rear. This staircase sits between two service rooms: a pantry on the left and a back kitchen on the right. The left-hand rooms have been combined into a single room. The first floor contains two heated chambers at the front, a box room between them, and two unheated chambers at the rear. A 20th-century bathroom has been added behind the staircase. The facade is symmetrical, with three windows and a central doorway; the window above the doorway is the same width as the doorway itself. A 20th-century door replaces the original. The windows are largely original 16-pane hornless sashes, with a single 12-pane hornless sash above the door.
Much of the original 19th-century carpentry and joinery remains inside, including the staircase, most doors, partitions, floors, and roof structure.
The painted rubble garden walls enclose a shallow rectangular area in front of the house, separating it from the farmyard. A central gateway is flanked by dressed granite gate piers.
