Description
Lowertown Bridge is a road bridge over the River Cober, built around the mid-19th century and widened in the late 19th or early 20th century. It is constructed of granite rubble and roughly dressed granite, featuring iron railings. The bridge has three spans supported by square-ended piers with granite lintels between them, and it includes low parapets made of large granite blocks. Simple iron handrails are threaded through ball joints over straightforward iron stanchions set into the parapets, with round-headed granite monolithic terminal piers at both ends. The bridge is built on the 'clapper bridge' principle and has not been altered since its widening.
