Description
Anvower Mill is a watermill built around the mid-19th century. It is constructed from killas and granite rubble, featuring dressed granite quoins, jambstones, and lintels, with slate sills. The roof is hipped and almost pyramidal, made of grouted scantle slate, and there is a brick chimney on the left side, which serves Anvower Mill House nearby. The mill has a rectangular, nearly square plan with a single-storey store added at the front in the 20th century. It is built into the bank at the rear, allowing walk-in access to the upper (second) floor from the road behind. A large overshot waterwheel remains beside the right-hand wall, adjacent to the slightly older miller's house on the left.
The mill has three storeys and features a nearly symmetrical three-window front on the southeast side, although the lower part is blocked by the 20th-century extension. The left-hand windows are grouped closer together, likely due to the construction against and over the older mill house. There are two original 16-pane, 2-light casements on the first floor, with original louvres in the second-floor right-hand opening; the other windows are 20th-century replacements. The right-hand wall has one opening on the first floor. The waterwheel has wooden spokes and buckets, with cast iron segments bolted together. At the rear, there is a centrally located, slightly arched loading doorway to the second floor, equipped with a ledged door.
The interior is reported to be very complete, retaining original floors, machinery, and roof structure. Anvower Mill is situated just below Lowertown Mill and benefits from having second-floor loading access from ground level, allowing it to be operated by one person instead of two.
