Description
The Stables at Lowertown Mill are a group of outbuildings, primarily stables, dating from the early to mid 19th century. They feature painted rubble walls with dressed granite quoins, jambstones, and lintels. The roofs are made of grouted scantle slate with gable ends, although the front part of the main stable has been replaced with corrugated asbestos. A brick chimney is located over one gable end.
The buildings form a shallow, irregular U-shape. The central stable building has two bays and is flanked by a single-cell stable on the right. At either end, there are two additional single-cell buildings; the left one is attached to the left gable end of the main block, while the right one is set back and detached from the right gable end.
All buildings are single storey. The main stable has a symmetrical front with a central doorway and a window on each side. The adjoining stable on the right features a wide doorway on the left and a small window on the right. Each of the other buildings has a doorway in its front gable end, with the left-hand gable being weatherboarded. The doors are ledged.
These stables are an important part of a closely related group of listed buildings in the hamlet.
