Description

The stables located approximately 8 meters south-west of Carminowe Farmhouse were built around 1860. They feature walls made of shale rubble, with dressed granite quoins, jambstones, and some lintels that include reused late medieval fragments. The roof is made of grouted scantle slate and slopes lower over most of the front, with a gable end on the left (east) side that includes a reused finial stone and an adjoining implement shed on the right.

The stables have a rectangular plan with six compartments for stables or loose boxes. The left-hand stable is shallower to create a passageway in front, while the fourth stable from the left is much wider, and the two stables on the far right are very narrow. All compartments have doorways facing north.

The building is a single storey with a seven-bay north front, where the left-hand bay is set back slightly. Originally, each bay had a doorway, except for the fourth from the left, which has a window with an upper glazed part and a lower part with a ventilator. There are additional ventilation slits made from reused jamb and arch stones between the fifth doorway (now with a window) and the far right. The wider principal doorway, fourth from the left, features reused moulded freestone jambstones. The central four openings are supported by a single softwood wallplate lintel. The doors are mostly original stable-type, ledged and braced.

The stables are part of a planned group of nearly complete farm buildings, with the horses having a prominent position at the top of the yard.
