Description
The stables at Yester House are a quadrangular stable block built mainly around 1825, with some earlier elements incorporated and classical details added around 1850. The building features a south elevation with droved pink ashlar, while the sides are made of red rubble with ashlar dressings. It has a moulded cornice with a blocking course, a base course, and hoodmoulds.
The principal south range consists of four symmetrical two-storey bays. There are sliding garage doors added to the central openings, and the first floor has recessed square panels, each containing a window, linked by a band course at the level of the meeting rail. Each panel has a broad keystoned hoodmould above it, and there is a blank tablet with a cornice above at the center. Flanking this range are single-storey corniced bays that are slightly recessed, each with a pedestrian doorway. The side ranges are single-storey and contain stables, featuring large windows and doors at intervals.
The rear north range has seven nearly symmetrical two-storey bays. The center bay is slightly advanced and features a segmental carriage arch at ground level, with a stone mullioned tripartite window above. There is a tablet set in the blocking course at the center. To the left of the doorway, there are two windows at ground level and three above. To the right, there are two doorways with three windows at ground level and three above. The windows have small-pane fanlights and a glazing pattern with pivoted panes in place of the upper sashes for the stables. The roof was not visible in 1989.
Inside, the stables are whitewashed and feature a plaster cornice and keystoned niche hayhecks, along with cast-iron railings and some original paintwork still visible. The timber stall divisions have acorn finials and are partially retained. There is also a laundry located in the rear range.
