Description
Anvower Millhouse is a miller's house dating from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of killas and granite rubble, featuring dressed granite quoins, jambstones, and lintels, with slate sills. The roof is made of grouted scantle slate and has brick chimneys at the gable ends. The right-hand gable end now serves as a party wall with the taller Anvower Mill, and the chimney was raised when the mill was built around the mid-19th century.
The house consists of two rooms, with an entrance lobby and staircase between them. The right-hand room is slightly wider and likely serves as the kitchen or living room, while the left-hand room is probably the parlour. It is two storeys high and has a nearly symmetrical three-window front on the southeast side, with a doorway that is central to the windows, all slightly grouped to the left. A glazed porch, added around the 1930s, features doors and four-pane horned sashes, which are likely of the same period but remain in their original openings.
The house is part of an interesting group of listed buildings in Lowertown, which includes two mills and an institute.
