Description

Criffle Mill is a watermill dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with few later alterations. It is constructed of slatestone rubble and features a hipped roof made of slate and corrugated asbestos. The building is two storeys high, with an additional two-storey section on the left side that includes a cellar underneath.

The main mill has an overshot waterwheel located at the rear, with a tailrace that channels around the right side of the front of the building. There may have been a secondary wheel on the right side, powered by the tailrace. The front of the mill includes a door and a window opening at ground floor level, two window openings at the first floor with cambered stone heads, and an upper loading door for the loft at the second floor.

The left side of the mill has a straight joint to the addition, featuring a ground floor three-light window opening with a granite lintel and a similar cellar window opening. There is also a door and window opening on the left side, with two windows at the first floor and a gabled dormer above. The right side has an upper loading door with a cambered stone head; the ground floor is partly rendered and was formerly enclosed by a lean-to structure. There is an opening in the wall, possibly for the watershaft of a secondary wheel, with a pit below. The rear of the building has a single-storey lean-to addition, and the cast iron rim of the waterwheel remains, along with some wooden spokes and the cast iron watershaft; the wheel would have been driven from a wooden launder.

Inside, at ground floor level towards the rear, the watershaft, pit wheel, wallower, and great spur wheel are still present. There is no machinery left at the first floor level, except for three furrowed millstones. This mill is a good example of a corn mill, featuring a spout floor, stone floor, and bin floor. It also has a trap door between the ground and first floors of the addition, which would have been used for storage, and is unusual for having a cellar.
