Description
Penewin Farmhouse, now a house, was built in the late 18th century, with alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of rendered stone rubble, with a two-span asbestos slate roof featuring gable ends and gable end stacks. The original layout was a double depth plan, with a central entrance passage leading to principal rooms on either side of the front range, each heated by a gable end stack. There were also two service rooms at the rear, with a straight staircase inserted in the 20th century between them; the staircase was formerly located in the front entrance passage. A doorway has been knocked through between the front and rear rooms on the left side of the house, revealing a timber lintel that may be a remnant of a former door.
Attached to the left side is a single-storey outhouse with a slurried slate roof, ridge tiles, and a surviving hand-made crested ridge tile. The outhouse contains a pump, a granite trough, and a slate floor. It has a 20th-century door and window on the right, and a door and window in the centre. The left gable end has a window with a timber lintel. The rear elevation is of rubble construction with brick dressings. On the ground floor to the left, there is a blocked doorway with a 20th-century window inserted, alongside a casement and a two-light casement. The end on the right has a three-light casement with a brick segmental head. At first floor, there are two-light casements on either side, with a larger central two-light casement, all with brick segmental heads dating from the 19th or early 20th century. The front of the house has a symmetrical three-window facade of 19th century design, featuring 16-pane sashes with keystones. A 20th-century glazed porch has been added with a half-glazed door and a 12-pane sash with four-pane sidelights. A plate-glass sash is located on the left side at first floor. The interior of the farmhouse has not been inspected.
