Description

Town Mills is a watermill, likely built in the early 19th century, with later additions and alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of painted stone rubble and is partly slate-hung, featuring slate roofs with ridge tiles and gable ends.

The original mill is a rectangular structure on the left side, with a leat running along its left side from front to rear; however, the waterwheel is missing. In the later 19th century, a wing was added to the right and another wing to the rear right.

The main mill is three stories high, with a gable end facing the front. The second floor is slate-hung. The ground floor has a 20th-century door, while the first floor features double loading doors. The second floor has a gabled wooden hoist housing for unloading sacks of flour, complete with a drop-chute floor and a 20th-century window at the top. Granite quoins are present on both the left and right sides, and there is a straight joint on the right where the lower two-story wing is attached. This wing is also slate-hung, with rag slates at the first floor level. The ground floor has three doors and two windows, while the first floor has three loading doors. The hip of the roof of the rear wings is visible above the main roof ridge. On the left side of the main mill, which is partly slate-hung at the upper level, the ground floor has a double-width opening to the left and two window openings to the right. The first and second floors each have two 2-light casements, with some remaining 8-pane casements. The rear gable end of the mill features loading doors at each level, and the roof over the main mill has a small gabled ventilator. The interior has not been inspected.
