Description

Smestow Mill is a water mill, likely dating from the early 19th century, with later machinery installed in 1839 and 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of whitewashed brick with plain tile and interlocking tile roofs, and brick stacks. The mill has a T-shaped plan; the main north-south block faces east with a watershed wing to the rear.

The central three-storey, three-bay gabled block features 20th-century top-opening windows in original segmental-headed openings. A toothed band runs above the second-floor windows. The mill has a central door and a boarded loft door, with a hoist above. Flanking this main block are two-storey, three-bay wings, each with a toothed eaves band and a central pediment, also containing 20th-century windows. The left-hand wing has blind semi-circular arch windows to the first floor and a blind lunette in the pediment. The upper parts of the right-hand wing have been partly rebuilt in the 20th century. The gable of the right-hand wing includes a blocked semi-circular carriage arch springing from imposts with raised key stones, and a blind lunette above.

Inside, a cast iron eight-spoke breast-shot water wheel sits in the watershed to the rear. The interior also features chamfered ceiling beams.
