Description

HELSTON

SW62NW BREAGE ROAD 631-1/1/4 Mill at Methleigh 25/07/79 (Formerly Listed as: BREAGE ROAD Farmyard buildings including watermill at Methleigh)

GV II

Watermill. Probably early C19 foundations, mostly rebuilt mid C19. Killas and granite dressings; scantle slate roof. Small rectangular plan with deep wheel slot on each side and further slot at rear end; surviving 22 foot diameter overshot wheel on the left (with timber arms missing except for fragments set in the nave). 3 storeys with 2nd floor partly in roof space; symmetrical 2-window front gable end. 6-pane windows; central doorway to each floor; ledged doors the upper doorway with corbelled sack hoist over. Doorway to 1st floor of each return wall, approached by bridges. INTERIOR: mid C19 floors, roof structure and later C19 complete mill machinery with 2 drive gears, one complete with wooden cogs, and 2 sets of stones to 1st (stone) floor set in octagonal wooden cases; hoisting pulley in attic and the sawn-off remains of 2 heavy timbers from the earlier machinery. The water supply system at Methleigh serving mill, farm buildings, house and gardens, is a considerable feat of planning and engineering and is probably the most complex of its kind in Cornwall.
