Description
The bank barn and attached cart shed at Methleigh Farm is a large structure built in the mid-19th century. It is constructed from Killas and granite rubble with granite dressings and features a grouted scantle slate hipped roof. The building has an L-shaped plan that includes the mill leat and wheel pit of a mill, situated between the rear of the barn and the bank, forming part of a planned farmyard.
The barn is two storeys high, with two sets of two-window fronts at the inner angles. Most of the windows have diagonally set wooden stanchions. The left-hand range displays a symmetrical arrangement of windows over doorways, flanking a central loading doorway, with a similar loading doorway on the right side, which also has a threshing winnowing doorway at the rear. Adjacent to this range is a double cart shed with a loft, rounded wall, and leat wall at the rear left. The other front of the barn is symmetrical, featuring a central loading doorway with a rear doorway opposite the mill doorway and two doorways on the ground floor. The doors are 20th-century boarded doors with original hinges.
Inside the barn, the floors have been partly removed, revealing original nailed collar trusses. The cartshed contains two reused 17th-century chamfered hardwood joists, likely salvaged from the farmhouse. This building is part of a planned group at Methleigh, arranged around a cobbled yard that once included a central dung pit, now infilled. The water supply system at Methleigh, which serves the mill, farm buildings, house, and gardens, is a significant achievement in planning and engineering, likely the most complex of its kind in Cornwall.
