Description

Pawton Mill is a water mill dating to the early 19th century. It likely occupies the site of an earlier mill, and machinery installed after 1850 remains in situ. The mill is constructed of stone rubble with an asbestos slate roof and gable ends, with some slate hanging on the right-hand gable.

The overall plan is rectangular, comprising a meal floor, stone floor, and bin floor. An overshot wheel, which drove two pairs of millstones, is located on the left-hand gable. The mill is built into a bank, with the ground sloping down to the rear. The two-storey front elevation contains the stone and bin floors, with access to the meal floor on the right-hand gable end. The front has an asymmetrical two-window arrangement, with a plank door to the right of centre and the remains of a 19th century two-light casement window to the left. Two further remains of 19th century two-light casement windows are present on the first floor. The overshot wheel on the left-hand gable is a hybrid pitchbackwheel manufactured by Oatey of Wadebridge, with a diameter of over 7.0 metres, and features iron hubs and axle, wooden spokes and buckets, and iron shrouds. Remains of a stone rubble launder are also present.

Internally, despite being derelict, the mill retains much of its machinery from after 1850. The hurst frame remains intact, supporting two bedstones. The stone floor includes French Buhr runner stones and stone cases or tuns. The bin floor has a sack hoist control arm and rope bollard. One grain bin remains in place with a cat walk from the sack well.
