Ley And Daniel Chest Tombs At Approximately 5 Metres South Of Church Of St Maddern

The Ley and Daniel chest tombs are located approximately 5 meters south of the Church of St Maddern. These two chest tombs date from the 18th century and early 19th century. The northern chest is dedicated to Daniel Ley of Penzance, who died in 1806 at the age of 54. It is made of granite ashlar and features an incised slate inset on the north side, with a rectangular plan and a moulded lid. The southern chest commemorates Alexander Daniel, who died in 1668, and his son George Daniel, a gentleman who was the donor of the adjoining free school and died in 1716. This tomb has granite monolithic sides, a moulded granite lid, and an incised slate inset on the lid, also with a rectangular plan. The southern chest was repaired by trustees in 1780, 1818, and 1858.
