Description
The lych gate and mounting block, located southwest of the Church of St Maddern in Madron, was built around 1903 as a war memorial for those who died in the Boer War (1899-1902). It features granite ashlar side walls and dressed granite steps, with an oak roof structure that has open gable ends supported by paired shaped oak corbels. The roof is covered with dry slate. The lych gate has a rectangular-plan stile with steps at the front, and the mounting block is situated to the right, with straight side walls that support the roof. The roof structure includes two trusses with tie beams and crown posts, which are enhanced by arched bracing.
