Description
There are two Thomas headstones, a Bilkey headstone, and two other headstones located at the east end of the south aisle of the Church of St Maddern. These headstones date from the 18th and 19th centuries and are attached to the church wall, with two additional headstones nearby. The inscriptions on the headstones include: William Thomas of Trengwainton, who died in 1781 at the age of 53, along with Robert and Catherine, his wife, who died in 1780; William Bilkey, a yeoman from Boscathnoe, who died in 1844 at the age of 61; Mary, the wife of James Thomas, who died in 1812 at the age of 46; and Catherine William, their daughter, who was tragically shot in Churchtown by a boy named William Knight on December 2, 1816, at the age of 9. Additionally, there are two round-headed granite monoliths nearby inscribed with the initials WI and BM.
