Description
The Hitchens chest tombs are located by the east end of the north aisle of the Church of St Maddern in Madron. These are a pair of chest tombs with iron railings, dating from the early 19th century. One tomb is dedicated to Henry John Hitchens of Poltair, who died in 1804 at the age of 35, while the inscription on the other tomb is indecipherable. The tombs are made of dressed granite and feature incised slates set into the lids. They have plinths, shaped sides, and squared edged lids. The rectangular plan of the chests is complemented by original iron railings that are bowed on plan at the east end of each chest.
