Description
The Whittington War Memorial Lychgate is a churchyard lych gate built around 1920 as a memorial to those who fell in the First World War.
Constructed from carved oak, it features a plain tiled roof and limestone flank walls at its lower body. The lych gate is located at the southern entrance to the churchyard, southeast of the church, with the north and south fronts being essentially similar. The flank walls are made of ashlar stone and have a moulded coping. Shaped wooden brackets connect the walls to the upright posts that rise from the ground on either side of the paired gates. These gates appear to be original, featuring chamfers, long iron hinges, and brattished top rails.
Arched braces with cut-out trefoils connect to a tie beam that has a brattished cresting. The south face of the tie beam is inscribed with the words, "In memory of Parishioners and other Worshippers in this Church / who served in the Great War 1914-1918." A king post and angled struts support the roof, which is adorned with moulded bargeboards, swept eaves, and a wooden cross at its apex. The north face includes iron tie rods on either side that rise from the ground to support the lateral posts.
