Description

The Coastguard Station Flats and Nos 1, 2, and 3 Peninhay, built between 1892 and 1893, consist of a coastguard station and houses. The structure features limestone rubble walls with some stone dressings and a dry slate roof, which includes a central crosswing gable and stone and brick axial stacks on the far right. This double-depth plan terrace comprises eight houses, with a central pair flanking a carriage entrance that has an observation room above. The building is two storeys high and presents a slightly asymmetrical range of 17 windows.

It retains original horned sash windows with glazing bars, and the central entrance gateway is adorned with a moulded four-centred arch. Above this, there is a corbelled canted oriel window, with small flanking windows on each floor and one-window fronts on either side. To the left, there are two pairs of houses, with the left-hand pair featuring central doorways and the other pair having two small windows between the doorways. The house on the left is slightly taller with a two-window range, while the house on the right has a shallow gable projection and two windows on each floor. Various 20th-century doors have been added. The building is a complete and impressive example of its type.
