Description

The Looe War Memorial is a granite war memorial cross erected in 1921. It stands on a two-stepped square base, surmounted by a square plinth. The tapering rectangular shaft features a carved Celtic design on both the front (east) and rear faces and is topped by a Celtic wheel-head cross. Stone tablets with scrolled edges are set into the sides of the base. These tablets contain relief panels inscribed with the names of those who died in the First World War (1914-1919), the Second World War (1939-1945), and one individual who died in Afghanistan in 2009. Inscriptions on the east face of the plinth read β€œTO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND/ IN HONOURED MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF LOOE/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919/ ALSO/ IN GRATEFUL APPRECIATION/ OF THE SERVICES/ OF/ THOSE WHO RETURNED.” The other faces of the plinth bear similar inscriptions for the Second World War and Afghanistan. The memorial is situated within a garden area enclosed by metal railings, to which later memorial boards have been fixed. These boards are not considered to be of special architectural or historic interest.
