Description

5 Tower Hill Avenue is a late Georgian, two-storey house constructed from snecked local rubble, featuring freestone quoins, gable parapets with kneelers, and window dressings. The building has a slate roof and yellow brick chimney stacks with red brick cornice bands.

The houses numbered 1 to 5 have two-window fronts, and all except No 2, which has modern windows, retain 16-pane sash glazing with deep stone lintels. The south elevation has modern half-glazed doors, which originally formed the rear of the terrace before the development of Tower Hill Avenue. No 1 does not have a door on the south side, as the entrance remains on the north side, now considered the rear. The other houses in the terrace still have these as back doors, with similar small-pane sashes on this side and modern windows in No 2. Some houses have only one window on the first floor, and No 1 has had a horned sash inserted with a cemented surround. Some old downpipes with embossed anchors are still present.

At the eastern end, the larger Coastguard Cottage features a two plus one-window elevation facing Tower Hill Avenue, with taller 16-pane sash windows that extend up to the eaves level. The two-window gable end facing Marine Parade has similar windows and an offset flat roof porch with a round arched entrance and a modern door, along with a one-bay section beyond that has a similar ground floor window. To the north of the gable parapet, which indicates the former end of the building, is a three-bay extension built in 1959, matching the original height and featuring a hipped roof.

Inside Coastguard Cottage, there are moulded cornices, a late Georgian staircase, some arched recesses, and large cellars.
