Description

1 Tower Hill Avenue is a late Georgian, two-storey house constructed from snecked local rubble, featuring freestone quoins, gable parapets with kneelers, and window dressings. It has a slate roof and yellow brick chimney stacks with red brick cornice bands. The houses numbered 1 to 5 have two-window fronts, and all except No 2, which has modern windows, retain 16-pane sash glazing with deep stone lintels. The southern elevation has modern half-glazed doors, which originally formed the rear of the terrace before the creation of Tower Hill Avenue. No 1 lacks a door on the south side, with the entrance still located on the north side, now the rear. The other houses in the terrace maintain these as back doors, featuring similar small-pane sashes on this side, while No 2 has modern windows. Some houses have only one window on the first floor, and No 1 has had a horned sash inserted with a cemented surround. Several old downpipes remain, complete with embossed anchors.

At the eastern end, the larger Coastguard Cottage features a two-plus-one window elevation facing Tower Hill Avenue, with taller 16-pane sash windows that extend to eaves level. The two-window gable end facing Marine Parade has similar windows and an offset flat roof porch with a round arched entrance and a modern door, along with a one-bay section beyond that has a similar ground floor window. North of the gable parapet, which indicates the former end of the building, is a three-bay extension from 1959, matching the original height and featuring a hipped roof.

Inside Coastguard Cottage, there are moulded cornices, a late Georgian staircase, some arched recesses, and large cellars.
