Description
2 Tower Hill Avenue is a late Georgian, 2-storey house constructed from snecked local rubble with freestone quoins, gable parapets featuring kneelers, and window dressings. The roof is covered with slate, and there are yellow brick chimney stacks adorned with red brick cornice bands.
The houses numbered 1 to 5 have 2-window fronts, and all except No 2, which has modern windows, retain 16-pane sash glazing with deep stone lintels. The south elevation has modern half-glazed doors, which originally served as the rear of the terrace before the creation of Tower Hill Avenue. No 1 does not have a door on the south side, with its entrance still located on the north side, now considered the rear. The other houses in the terrace maintain these as back doors, featuring similar small-pane sashes on this side and modern windows on No 2. Some houses have only a 1-window arrangement on the first floor, and a horned sash window has been inserted into No 1 with a cemented surround. Several old downpipes remain, complete with embossed anchors.
At the eastern end, the larger Coastguard Cottage has a 2+1-window elevation facing Tower Hill Avenue, with taller 16-pane sash windows that extend to the eaves. The 2-window gable end facing Marine Parade features similar windows and an offset flat roof porch with a round arched entrance and a modern door, along with a 1-bay beyond that has a similar ground floor window. North of the gable parapet, which indicates the former end of the building, is a 3-bay extension built in 1959 that matches the height of the original structure and has a hipped roof.
Inside Coastguard Cottage, there are moulded cornices, a late Georgian staircase, some arched recesses, and large cellars.
