Description

These are a row of late Georgian houses, built in the late 18th century, of snecked local rubble with freestone quoins. They feature gable parapets with kneelers and window dressings, a slate roof, and yellow brick chimney stacks with red brick cornice bands.

Nos. 1 to 5 have two-window fronts. All but No. 2 retain original 16-pane sash windows with deep stone lintels; No. 2 has modern windows. The original rear elevation, which now fronts onto Tower Hill Avenue, has modern half-glazed doors. No. 1 has no door on this side, retaining its original entrance on the north side (now the rear). The other houses in the terrace still have these rear doors, along with similar small-pane sashes, though No. 2 has modern windows. A single-horned sash window has been inserted into No. 1, set within a cemented surround. Some original downpipes are preserved, complete with embossed anchors.

The Coastguard Cottage at the eastern end of the row has a three-window elevation to Tower Hill Avenue, with taller 16-pane sash windows extending to eaves level. The gable end facing Marine Parade has a two-window facade with similar windows and an offset flat-roofed porch, featuring a round-arched entrance and modern door. Beyond this, there is a single bay with a similar ground-floor window. A three-bay extension, built of matching materials and with a hipped roof, was added in 1959, extending northwards from the original gable parapet.

The interior of the Coastguard Cottage includes moulded cornices, a late Georgian staircase, some arched recesses, and large cellars.
