Description

Coastguard Cottage is a late Georgian, two-storey house constructed from snecked local rubble, featuring freestone quoins, gable parapets with kneelers, and window dressings. It has a slate roof and yellow brick chimney stacks adorned with red brick cornice bands.

The houses numbered 1 to 5 have two-window fronts, and all except number 2, which has modern windows, retain 16-pane sash glazing with deep stone lintels. The south elevation has modern half-glazed doors, which originally served as the rear of the terrace before the construction of Tower Hill Avenue. Number 1 does not have a door on the south side, with its entrance still located on the north side, now the rear. Other houses in the terrace maintain these as back doors, featuring similar small-pane sashes on this side and modern windows in number 2. Some houses have only one window on the first floor, and a horned sash window has been inserted into number 1 with a cemented surround. Several old downpipes remain, complete with embossed anchors.

Coastguard Cottage, the larger house at the eastern end, has a two plus one-window elevation facing Tower Hill Avenue, with taller 16-pane sash windows that extend up to the eaves. The two-window gable end facing Marine Parade features similar windows and an offset flat roof porch with a round arched entrance and modern door, along with a one-bay section beyond that has a similar ground floor window. North of the gable parapet, which marks the former end of the building, is a three-bay extension built in 1959, matching the original height and featuring a hipped roof.

Inside Coastguard Cottage, there are moulded cornices, a late Georgian staircase, some arched recesses, and large cellars.
