Description

South Lodge to Windsor Gardens is a picturesque small park lodge built in a domestic revival style. It features Flemish bond red brick and tile with some half-timbering, and has a roughly coursed and squared low stone plinth topped with chamfered black bricks. The plain tiled roof has ridge cresting and an axial stack on the main gabled range. The building has a balanced asymmetrical composition with a compact plan, comprising a two-storeyed central gabled range flanked by lower bays, each with a porch entrance.

The gabled main front range showcases half-timbering at the gable apex, which projects on timber corbels. The upper storey is adorned with tile hanging and features a 3-light timber casement window with small upper panes, advanced on timber brackets. The larger ground floor has a 3-light stone-mullioned window that includes a central sash and flanking casements, all with small upper panes. The rear gable has a similar arrangement but with smaller ground floor two and four pane sash windows, pale stone sills, and brick lintels, along with a doorway to the right. Projecting outshuts containing stores flank the rear gable.

To the left, a narrow one and a half storey bay has a roof with overhanging eaves, advanced as a cat slide over the porch at the front. The left side gable features a pair of two-light casement windows with stone surrounds on the ground floor and a two-light timber window lighting the stairs in the gable apex above. The longer right-hand bay has a hipped roof with overhanging eaves advanced over a porch that includes a small half-timbered gable over the entrance. The right-hand return has paired two-light casement windows with a mullion. The porches on either side rest on turned-wood columns in hourglass shapes atop concrete balustrades with vase-shaped balusters and cuboid posts. The porches are finished with lozenge pattern red and black floor tiles.

The lodge has been modernised as an ice cream parlour, although the original interior partitions and fireplaces were lost much earlier. The ground floor servery and dining area feature cornices, while the first floor windows have exposed timber lintels. The staircase is complemented by a timber balustrade.
