Description

This is a house built in a strong modernist style. The construction utilizes reinforced concrete for the floors and roof, brick piers, and metal window details. The exterior features white-rendered walls and a flat roof with bold, projecting eaves. The house is two storeys and has a rectilinear form, with the entrance front stepped to create visual interest. The main entrance is within a recessed block to the left, and the staircase is located in the curving angle of the projecting right-hand range. Windows are arranged in horizontal bands on each floor. The recessed entrance block features a four-light window sheltered by a long, slender, curved, cantilevered canopy, supporting double doors with small glazed panels. The upper storey has deeper windows, and the stair-window in the curving angle is trapezoidal, following the slope of the stairs. The long elevation has banded windows, with the ground floor windows being shorter. A return elevation to the right includes a side doorway with a curved canopy hood and matching bands of windows. The garden front is extensively glazed with near-continuous bands of windows on each floor, creating a strong geometric design. A full-height, curved bay breaks the window bands, also featuring continuous fenestration. While the entrance elevation has plain detailing, the ground floor windows on the garden front include sills and cornices, adding some visual detail. To the left of the curved bay, French doors are incorporated into the window bands, and all lower windows have narrow top-lights.

A low terrace mirrors the lines of the house, featuring a ramped central element that echoes the projecting bay, continuing to the right to enclose a small terrace. Further curving walls define a circular parking area on the entrance front, helping to integrate the house with its surrounding gardens.

Inside, the house is planned around a central corridor, with the main rooms overlooking the garden and the kitchen at the front. A sitting room and study are divided by a folding screen, and the kitchen retains its original fitted units. A dramatic, tightly curving cantilevered staircase features a solid balustrade. Upstairs, the layout is similar, with the main bedrooms overlooking the garden and former maids' rooms and bathrooms at the front. Further original fitted furniture and fireplaces remain.
