Description

The Coastguard Cottages, now a terrace of eight houses, were built around 1880. They feature Flemish bond brickwork with stone dressings and a slate roof. The cottages form a long row, accessed from a terrace on the north side, away from the street, and they face the Harbour.

The exterior is two storeys high, with the Barrack Road front displaying nine windows across the top row and two in the lower row, all of which are small 12-pane sashes set in flush stone dressings with alternating jambs and stone sills. The gables have raised coped verges with bold stone and brick kneelers, and there are five brick ridge stacks with brick cappings. The right-hand gable end features two windows and a plank door topped with a 3-pane transom light. The north side mirrors this design, with eight original doors, each under 3-pane transom lights, set on two stone steps and accompanied by cast-iron foot-scrapers and small single lights. The cast-iron ogee gutters have down-pipes adorned with an Admiralty anchor cast.

The interior was not inspected.

As for subsidiary features, there is a full-width low brick wall with stone coping, approximately 0.65 meters high, along Barrack Road. At each end of the wall are pairs of square stone gate-piers topped with low pyramidal cappings. The wall extends to the right, linking with the boundary of Nothe House. This row of cottages is noted for being an unusually complete example of purpose-built housing of this type and has group value with the Master's house, Nothe House, which is immediately adjacent.
