Description
Wellington Court is a block of six apartments, dating from the early 19th century. It originally formed part of the Red Barracks, a chain of cavalry stations planned along the south coast by General Col DeLancey. The building comprises two linked sections forming an āLā shape.
The lower range, across the northwest end, has a short return to the higher range to the south. It is two storeys high with three 9-pane sashes at first floor, and two sashes to the ground floor. A former doorway is now blocked. A hipped porch with panelled doors sits in the re-entrant angle, with a small oculus above the door on the return. The left-hand quoins are rendered, as is the return wall. A single sash window is present at each level on the opposite end. The range has a low-pitched hipped roof.
The linked range to the south is two storeys high with three windows. It features 12-pane sashes in plain reveals, set within good brick voussoirs and stone sills. The rendered rear wall has two sashes at each level. The outer gable end is plain. The pyramidal roof features a finial and a 2-course brick eaves band. The rear wall, facing the harbour, has 12-pane sashes, five at first floor and four below, set on a rubble plinth.
The building is constructed of Flemish bond brickwork, or rendered, with a slate roof. The interior has not been inspected. Wellington Court forms part of an externally complete group.
