Description

Wellington Court, originally Red Barracks, is a block of four apartments dating from the early 19th century. Constructed as part of a chain of cavalry stations along the south coast, planned by General Col DeLancey, it forms part of a visually complete grouping. The building is characterised by Flemish bond brickwork, with some areas rendered, and has a slate roof. It is a simple two-storey structure with a nine-window front. The windows are 12-pane sashes set within good brick voussoirs and stone sills. The central bay features a recessed blind arch containing a 20th-century door with a transom light, accessed by two steps. A single-storey porch links the left end to numbers 54-59, and the right end, also rendered, has 12-pane sashes on both levels. The rear elevation is brick, arranged in a 4:1:4 bay layout, with two-light casements with transom lights in brick segmental heads, rendered jambs, and stone sills. A small two-light casement is present in the centre bay. At ground floor level, the first five bays have smaller two-light casements, with new brick infill above. The building has a low-pitched hipped roof with a two-course brick eaves band. The interior has not been inspected.
