Detached house, built in association with adjacent Coastguard Cottages (qv). c1880. Flemish bond brickwork with flush stone dressings, slate roof. PLAN: L-plan, symmetrical front hipped block, the main entry facing E, towards Nothe Fort; a C20 glazed one-storey extension has been made to the rear. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 3x2 windows, all 12-pane sashes, with the panes slightly over-square horizontally, in flush lintel and alternating jambs, stone sill. Centred is a flat-roofed square porch with bold stepped brick cornice and stone coping over a plain arch to a 4-pane flush C19 door with plain fanlight. Small arched lights each side of the porch. To Barrack Road and the opposite face there are 2 windows at each level. The rear, or W end, has a plain rendered wall to a coped gable with stack; there are 2 further brick stacks. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: a low brick wall, approx 0.75m high to a stone coping returns to the gate-piers to the cottages and has, opposite its entry, a pair of square gate piers in brick to a low pyramidal capping, with a wooden gate. Except for the rear addition, this remains as built, and is part of an ensemble with the coastguard cottages to the W (qv).
