Description
Nothe House is a detached house built around 1880, associated with the nearby Coastguard Cottages. It features Flemish bond brickwork with flush stone dressings and a slate roof. The house has an L-shaped plan with a symmetrical front hipped block, and the main entrance faces east towards Nothe Fort. A 20th-century glazed one-storey extension has been added to the rear.
The house stands two storeys tall and has three sets of two windows, all of which are 12-pane sashes with slightly over-square panes arranged in flush lintels and alternating jambs, set on stone sills. The entrance is marked by a flat-roofed square porch with a bold stepped brick cornice and stone coping, leading to a plain arch that frames a 4-pane flush 19th-century door with a plain fanlight. There are small arched lights on either side of the porch. On Barrack Road and the opposite side, there are two windows on each level. The rear, or west end, has a plain rendered wall leading to a coped gable with a stack, along with two additional brick stacks.
The interior has not been inspected. The property includes a low brick wall approximately 0.75 meters high with a stone coping that returns to the gate piers of the cottages. Opposite the entry, there are square brick gate piers topped with low pyramidal caps and a wooden gate. Except for the rear addition, the house remains as originally built and is part of a group with the coastguard cottages to the west.
