Description
The boundary walls and gate piers to No. 54 The Priory were built in the early 19th century. They are made of limestone ashlar and dressed stone. On the left side of the frontage, there is a pair of square ashlar piers featuring double sunk panels with four-centred heads on both the front and the return. These piers have block copings and cross-roll flat gabled cappings. To the left, there is a very short section of wall with a flat coping, while to the right, a broad quadrant of wall slopes down to the pavement edge. This wall continues down the slope of the hill across the entire width of the site, standing approximately 2.5 meters high but stepping down to about 2.1 meters at the center. The gateway serves both Nos 54 and 56, although No. 56 is not included in this listing. The walls are an important feature in the townscape of the hill.
