Description

No. 54 The Priory is a detached villa built in the early 19th century. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features slate roofs. The exterior showcases a compact, symmetrical, picturesque Tudor design, with a gabled front range that has three hipped ends at the rear. To the right, there is a lower return wing that is set behind and partly crosses the rear, along with a gabled former coach-house.

The villa stands two storeys tall, with the main front having one window on each side of a set-back center. Each window has a gable and features two-light casements in chamfered surrounds with prominent drip courses that have dropped ends. The ground floor includes French casements with a transom. The center section has a casement in a pointed arch with a drip above a projecting hexagonal porch. This porch is supported by open four-centred arches at the doorway and has buttresses with gabled heads and a crenellated parapet.

The front of the villa is adorned with a cornice mould and a moulded parapet, which is topped with four panelled octagonal corner pinnacles that have prominent cappings. Large ridge stacks with five diagonal shafts set on square bases are located to the left and right. The left return features a one-storey canted bay with stone mullions and a crenellated parapet, topped by a single casement with a drip, all under a broad flat gable with an end pinnacle. This side also has a slightly set-back gabled wing and an early conservatory. The right return is similar but has a broad square ground floor bay with paired lights and a crenellated parapet.

At the rear, there is a gabled wing that includes a staircase light and a corner turret, which continues as a two-storey low wing. This low wing has two two-light casements on each level and is attached to the former coach house, which has a slated gable roof to the eaves and various new or replacement lights. The rear features several casements arranged in four bays, and the low wing has an eaves stack. The villa is set high above the road in an extensive garden, located at the upper end of the development on the west side of Lyncombe Hill.
