Description

The boundary walls, steps, railings, and gates to Nos 50 and 52 on Lyncombe Hill date from the early 19th century. They are made of limestone ashlar, cut stone, and wrought iron. The exterior features a pair of square ashlar piers at the center, each with paired sunk panels and roundels on every face, topped with reeded blocking that carries low cross-roll gabled cappings. The original gates consist of spearhead rail and dog bar designs, set against a central decorative standard adorned with scrolls and five ball finials.

On either side, coursed stone walls with coping support low railings that rise to gate height, stepping up to solid walling in the outer sections. At each end, the return walls in rough coursed stone extend to the front of the villa, shared with adjacent gardens. Inside the gates, there is stone paving with steps on each side and a central railing, backed by a retaining wall that rises to a steep, coped center section. This arrangement leads back to a central party division ashlar wall with coping. This ensemble is an important addition to the houses, enclosing Lyncombe Hill on the west side and contributing to the townscape value.
