Description

The boundary walls, piers, steps, railings, and gates serving Nos 46 and 48 Lyncombe Hill date from the early 19th century. They are constructed from limestone ashlar, cut stone, and wrought iron.

At the center of the entrance to the villas, there are two square ashlar piers featuring double sunk panels and a central roundel on each face. The piers have a blocking with a reeded edge and low cross roll gabled cappings, supporting a pair of gates with pointed rails and dog bars. The central standard of the gates is embellished with scroll designs and is supported by a raking prop at the back.

On either side of the gates, there are lengths of simple pointed railings that match the height of the gatehead, set on a coped wall made of squared stone. This wall rises to full height in the outer sections. The gates open onto a stone landing, leading to divided flights of stone steps that are contained by an inner retaining wall. These steps rise to a high swept center made of ashlar with plain coping, and a wall in rough coursed stone runs back from this to the central party division.

The left party wall is shared with No. 50, while the right wall returns, following the steep slope of the access lane, to the end party wall. This ensemble is an important addition to the houses, with the walls and railings continuing to the left and enclosing Lyncombe Hill on the west side, contributing to the townscape value.
