Description

Thornloe Lodge (Number 21) and attached railings and gate are a pair of semi-detached villas dating from around 1820 to 1850. They are constructed of ashlar over brickwork, with concealed roof, ridge, and left-end stuccoed stacks.

The houses are two storeys high, with a basement, and feature six first-floor windows arranged in a 1:4:1 pattern, with the entrance ranges set back. Ashlar detailing includes a ground-floor band surmounted by end pilasters with sunk panels that extend through the ground and first floors to the ends of the central range. A tooled first-floor sill band is also present on the central range. The original windows are 6/6 sashes, taller on the ground floor; the house to the right has blind boxes to all openings. Basement windows are 3/6 sashes, all in plain reveals with sills. The entrance doors consist of six flush-and-fielded-panel doors with overlights and margin-lights, set within architraves featuring pilasters with sunk panels, a frieze, and a cornice. A crowning frieze and cornice is present on the end ranges, while the central range has wide eaves supported by simple brackets.

The interiors retain original joinery, including panelled shutters to the windows. Number 21 also has a dogleg staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail.

The ground-floor window guards have an elongated scroll pattern and a central scrolled lozenge motif. The railings to the sides of the steps also have a scrolled lozenge design. The railings and gate to the left and between the plots feature fleurs-de-lys at the head. The attached railings and gate contribute to the group value of the buildings.
